Shaun Powell
A sportswriting veteran for more than 25 years, Shaun Powell is a columnist at Newsday, based on Long Island and New York City. He has worked in a similar capacity at the Miami Herald and was also previously a sports reporter at the Dallas Times Herald and the St. Louis Globe Democrat, along with stints at the Washington Post and Oregonian.
He has covered a number of major events, including multiple Super Bowls, Final Fours, U.S. Open golf and tennis, Wimbledon, the Summer and Winter Olympics, the Masters golf tournament, NBA Finals, NCAA championships, world championship boxing matches, and World Series. His assignments have taken him to international sites such as South Africa, Tokyo, England, Scotland, Australia, Greece, and Italy.
He earned a journalism degree from Howard University in 1982. He has won numerous local and national awards and was cited for excellence by the Associated Press Sports Editors, the National Association of Black Journalists, the New York Deadline Club, and the U.S. Tennis Writers Association. He also served as a past president of the Pro Basketball Writers Association, was a freelance writer for The Sporting News and has appeared on many television and radio shows, including ESPN, MSNBC, CNN, and the Madison Square Garden Network.
Powell, his wife, and daughter reside in Montclair, New Jersey. |
